Without the proper skills, experience, or the support of a legitimate organization, four individuals quickly rushed to aid a badly ravished Sri Lanka village after two tsunamis left villagers without shelter, food or water in 2004. During their merciful year-long relief efforts, things turned awry, spirits became broken, tension began to flare, and emotions spiraled out of control. Throughout it all, the endurance in their hearts forged them ahead to do everything in their power to help 3,000 people rebuild their village.
Documenting their own efforts, Alison Thompson & Oscar Gubernati present an in-depth look at the heartbreak, the joy and the astonishing impact behind their diligent crusade. In the end the message is clear - the only element needed for volunteerism is the drive and the determination in your heart. THE THIRD WAVE truly is a volunteer story.
"It was our goal to have THE THIRD WAVE provide a genuine inside glimpse into what is really happening on the ground after a disaster," says Thompson. "Our hope is to encourage and inspire people to give a little back to the world."
"THE THIRD WAVE is truly a 'Must see!' - For ourselves, our children and anyone who has two good legs and a dollar in their pocket. It inspires the very best in us, just when we need that most, and comes as close to answering our purpose in life, more than any other film in my recent memory." - Sean Penn
Bonus features on the DVD include: Football without Boundaries, Photo Galleries, Sri Lanka in Pictures, Haiti in Pictures, and Updates on the Volunteers. For more information, visit: www.TheThirdWaveMovie.com
THE THIRD WAVE - Synopsis: After the 2004 Asian tsunami disaster, four independent volunteers raced off to Sri Lanka to see if they could help. With little money or experience they arrived in the main city, meeting each other by fate. They rented a van, filled it with supplies and drove off along the coast. They stumbled into Peraliya, a tribal village devastated by a 40 foot tsunami wave, which left more than 2,500 people dead. The volunteers set up a first aid station and quickly found themselves in charge of a refugee camp caring for over 3,000 people. What was originally a two-week journey spiraled into a year-long odyssey of hope, heartbreak and setbacks as the villagers slowly began to rise up against them when the world's donated tsunami money never materialized. The volunteers broke every rule in the '0Disaster Aid Book' and out of the rubble an entire village was re-born.
THE THIRD WAVE is a roadmap for volunteering. In a world of increased natural and man-made disasters: Everyone is needed... No experience required.
